Install a firewall
A firewall allows you to control the flow of data to and from your computer in order to avoid any unwanted connections.
For example, it could prevent hackers from accessing your shared folders, or prevent a worm that has infected your computer from spreading to the rest of the network.
Make sure at least that the firewall included with your operating system is enabled.
