Background: A hacker successfully gained entry to Harvard University’s server, which contains the personal information of thousands of students and former applicants.

Consequences: The academic records on the university’s server included many applicants’ and students’ dates of birth, email addresses, telephone numbers and grades on various tests. Nearly 6,600 of these files also contained the social security numbers of potential victims. Following the police investigation, the academic records of 19 applicants were found on the website Pirate Bay.
