Rogue security software
As the name indicates, rogue security software is a program that presents itself as credible software, although not in the least.
A rogue security software displays invalid and misleading alerts. Its goal is to make users panic and entice them into downloading files or paying for so-called repairs.
Signs of rogue security software
- Security alerts from unfamiliar security software often appear
- Your computer's settings have been changed and you are unable to restore them (for example, the desktop wallpaper is no longer the same)
- Annoying advertising windows continually pop up on your screen
- Your computer's performance has decreased and it is running slower
- Unknown addresses appear on your Internet browser's Favourites List
- New icons appear on your desktop
- You are no longer able to surf the Internet “normally”
Caution
Rogue software may:
- Mislead and alarm you for no reason
- Take your personal information
- Spy on you
- Defraud you by asking payment for a phoney or non-existent service
- Trigger the downloading of other malicious software
- Change how your computer normally works
How can you protect yourself?
- Use “real” antivirus software, a “real” spyware blocker and a “real” firewall
- Make sure you regularly update your antivirus software, spyware blocker, operating system, browser, and email client
- If an ad appears on your screen and prompts you to download a security solution or analyze your computer, do not click on it
- Avoid surfing on websites that contain illegal or questionable content
- Make a backup copy of your work files and system configuration
