Computer security

Each time you connect your computer to the Internet, it is potentially vulnerable to an attack or a breach. It is therefore important to make sure that your computer is properly protected.

Signs of a breach

  • Your computer's performance has decreased and it is running slower
  • Your computer starts up differently
  • Programs install themselves without your prompting
  • Your computer stops responding or frequently stops and re-starts
  • Anti-virus software has been desactivated without your knowledge

CAUTION: These symptoms may also be the result of physical or software problems that have nothing to do with a breach.

Caution

A fraudster may:

  • Change how your computer works or even take control of it
  • Steal your passwords
  • Use your computer as a relay to commit offences
  • Spy on you
  • Send emails using your identity
  • Take your personal information

How can you protect yourself?

Actions you can take

  • Install and, most importantly, keep your security software up to date (antivirus software, spyware blocker). It will scan your computer to detect and eliminate known viruses and spyware.
  • Install a firewall, which will block or monitor connections between your computer and the outside world (the Internet). If possible, get a physical firewall.
  • Copy and safeguard important files.
  • Completely shut down computers that are connected to the Internet when they are not used for long periods (evenings, nights, weekends, etc.).

Actions that require expertise

  • Update your operating system regularly.
  • Update all of your software regularly.
  • Where possible, avoid using an administrator's account to surf, as all programs run under Windows, for example, have users' rights that launch the programs. If the administrator inadvertently launches a virus, this virus will then have all the rights to change the system.
  • Control access to your personal network, particularly your wireless network. You should encrypt your information and choose an effective password for the login user control.
