Online computer identity
Once a computer is connected to the Internet, it sends all kinds of information needed to surf. It is important to be aware of this and properly protect your computer from attacks.
For example:
- IP address (number that identifies computers connected to the Internet) and therefore the geographic location of your Internet connection
- Web browser that you use and its version
- Operating system that you use and its version
Caution
With this information, fraudsters may:
- Target their attack using the IP address
- Use software installed on your computer to find and exploit its weaknesses
- Identify your profile (type of consumer, leisure activities, interests, etc.) or the region where you live and thus better target their attacks
How can you protect yourself?
You should:
- Properly secure your computer in order to protect the data it contains
- Keep your software up to date, particularly your security software
- Be aware of the consequences of your behaviour while online
